Frequently Asked Questions
why do we need a union?
While we value our mission of community outreach, our Union provides us with a legal, unified voice to negotiate for fair compensation, transparency in decision-making, and professional respect. Individual voices are easy to overlook but a collective voice is a legal mandate for MSU to listen.
Can I be fired or disciplined for supporting the union?
No. Under the National Labor Relations Act (and Michigan law for public employees like MSU Extension workers), it is illegal for an employer to retaliate, demote, or fire you for Union activity. Extension United is here to protect your right to organize and will provide support if any management interference occurs.
What is a "Grievance" and how is it different from a complaint?
A complaint is a general dissatisfaction; a grievance is a formal claim that the University has specifically violated the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
Example: Complaining that your office is small is a complaint. Filing because you were denied a contractually guaranteed raise is a grievance.
Who is eligible to join Extension United?
Eligibility is determined by your job classification. Most MSU Extension employees are eligible. We are comprised of two units (each with their own collective bargaining agreement). One unit is FAS and includes Educators, Specialists, Conservation Associates, etc. The other unit is EXPA and includes Program Coordinators, Program Instructors, and Community Nutrition Instructors.
Note: If you are unsure of your status, you can contact office@untf.org to confirm.
Now that we are unionized, can I still talk to my supervisor directly?
Yes. You are encouraged to maintain your professional relationship. Most issues can be resolved with a simple conversation. However, if that conversation turns into a formal disciplinary meeting, you have the right to have a Union representative present.
